Which Canon PowerShot cameras have a CCD sensor? CCD vs CMOS list

Canon's own Camera Museum states a CCD sensor for 159 of its 240 digital compacts and a CMOS sensor for 41. For the other 40 the page names neither, so this list says "Not stated" rather than guess. The first CMOS compact in the list is the PowerShot SX1 IS (2008); the last CCD one is the PowerShot ELPH 185 (2017).

Canon digital compacts with their sensor type

Type a model, a regional name (for example IXUS 70), a year, or CCD or CMOS to narrow the list. Each row shows the words from Canon's page that name the sensor.

When did Canon's compacts switch from CCD to CMOS?

Not at one moment. In the museum list the first CMOS compact is from 2008, the PowerShot SX1 IS, after 102 CCD models. CCD and CMOS compacts were then launched side by side in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017. The last CCD model is from 2017, and every later model that states a sensor says CMOS.

We give the dates, not the reason: the museum pages we read do not say why Canon chose one sensor type over the other for a given model, and we found no Canon statement we could cite for it.

Which Canon lines used CCD, and which CMOS?

By the museum's own grouping, CMOS appears in PowerShot ELPH / IXUS / IXY (14), PowerShot SX (11), PowerShot G (11), PowerShot S (2), PowerShot D (1), PowerShot V (2). Every model that states a sensor in PowerShot A, PowerShot Pro, Other says CCD. Counts per line:

PowerShot S152219
PowerShot N0033
PowerShot D1113
PowerShot V0202

The line is the museum's grouping (for example "PowerShot ELPH / IXUS / IXY"), not ours. A model can sit in a different line from the one its name suggests.

Is my Canon a CCD or a CMOS camera?

Find it in the table above; the row gives the sensor and the words Canon used. Search by any of its names, because the same camera has different names by region. If your row says "Not stated", Canon's museum page does not name the technology and we do not fill the gap; the camera's manual or spec sheet is the next place to look.

Why are 40 cameras marked "Not stated"?

Because the words CCD and CMOS do not appear in the sensor line or the description on their museum pages. They are all from 2010 to 2017; the spread by year is 2010 (3), 2011 (6), 2012 (6), 2013 (12), 2014 (10), 2015 (2), 2017 (1). Examples: PowerShot A3000 IS, PowerShot A490, PowerShot SX130 IS, PowerShot A2200, PowerShot A1200, IXY 32S.

Not stated does not mean unknown to Canon, only that the page we read does not say. We did not look the missing ones up in retailer lists, which often disagree with the maker.

How this list was made, and what it does not say

The list is Canon's own Camera Museum list of digital compact cameras, 240 models from 1995 to 2025.1 We read each model's museum page and keep only what the page states: the model names, the "Marketed" date, the sensor type and the power source. Each row links to its museum page. On 2026-10-19 we also re-fetched 20 random museum pages live and 20 of 20 gave the same sensor, battery and date values as our stored copy.

We do not copy Canon's descriptions or photos; the numbers and names are facts, each linked to its source.
